In 1961, rocknroll hits France like a tsunami. Most of the
rising stars are boys but a few chanteuses try their luck at the
new game. Among the pretty few, a nice looking actress,
Gelou. The cover of her first EP names her Rockin Gelou,
and her group is called Machiavel Rock... On tour, she
supports the biggest names in rock, les Chaussettes Noires,
Vince Taylor, les Pirates (a french outfit)... In 1962, like
almost everyone, she falls for the new craze, the twist. Charles
Aznavour, who then specializes in writing good songs for the
young domestic rockers, gives her the lively Notre Amour
Renaîtra. Gelou sometimes covers, in french, an american
song like Baby Its You (Shirelles) ou Unchain My Heart
(Ray Charles)... She also sings the famous Third Man
Theme on an up tempo. Demain reveals quite a feminine
sensuality... The five Gelou EPs are of course vividly sought
after by record collectors ; their prices climbing each year !
Those 20 songs are cute exemples of the the joie de vivre that
was prevalent in Paris during the early 60s... As a bonus, the
CD ends with the 1963 EP of another female artist, Nicole
Delarc doing two merseybeat classics, How Do You Do It ?
(Gerry & The Pacemakers) and Twist And Shout (Top
Notes, Isley Brothers, Beatles) and two originals. It rounds up
a nice CD (24 tracks) of femme rock.
