Two years before beatlemania, France has been flooded with thousands and thousands of rock groups, most of them modelling themselves on the Blues Caps or the Shadows. Some were outstanding, some were... enthusiasts ! More than four decades later, its easy to spot the really good ones, like the two combos heard here on this CD (25 tracks). In 1962, les Mercenaires - six parisian cowboys - were the first rock group to play Gainsbourg ( Quand Tu Ty Mets ) as well as covering Breaking Up Is Hard To Do (Neil Sedaka) or Hes The Boy (Little Eva). Les Gardians (1963-65) hailed from Marseilles. As is evidenced here, they could really handle their instruments, thats why some became session musicians and their guitar player later was in top french prog group Triangle.
